It is so bright in fact that you don't even need binoculars to view it and it will shine through even light-polluted cities. The city's famed Billy Goat Tavern, immortalized by John Belushi in a Saturday Night Live sketch as the Olympia Cafe, is located on the lower level of Michigan Avenue. On January 3, 2005, the upper and lower levels were closed at Kinzie Street for reconstruction (in conjunction with the Trump Tower Chicago development) but have since been reopened. The double-decked portion of Wabash Avenue north of the Chicago River was built in 1930, in conjunction with the single-level Wabash Avenue Bridge. Public road planning in Chicago began in 1910 when the Chicago Plan Commission was created to implement Daniel Burnham and Edward Bennett's plan. When the Illinois Center development was built on the east side of downtown, a new upper level was built, making most streets in that area three levels.Īfter about 1890, special interest groups, including recreational bicyclists, farmers delivering harvested crops to market, and motorists, began to mount support for concrete paving to replace the previously common dirt roads. However, this did not produce any two-level streets the first of those was Michigan Avenue in the late 1910s. The higher elevation allowed for sewers and proper drainage. The first raising occurred from 1855 to 1858, when streets and buildings were raised between four and seven feet above their former elevation, just a few feet above lake level, where they were constantly muddy. As a result, loading docks at street level are noticeably absent. This level houses the receiving/shipping entrances to the buildings on these streets. The lower levels generally serve through-traffic and trucks serving businesses along the roads. The primary entrances of buildings are usually located on this level. Generally, the upper levels of the multi-level streets usually serve local traffic. This also created an anomaly not only in the layout and uses of streets, but also planning of buildings. Many double-decked or triple-decked streets were created because they fell within this clearance zone. Thus, a clearance zone was created along the river at locations that contained many closely spaced crossings. Clearances were further necessitated due to the presence of many existing railroad tracks along the river (as in the west bank of the south branch) and tracks that ended at the river (such as the tracks ending at Randolph Street). However, most downtown streets crossed the river, and all of these crossings were bascule bridges, which required height clearances at the approaches to and over the river. In most other parts of the rest of the city near the Chicago River, only major streets crossed the river. The multilevel configuration arose from geography and traffic patterns in the Loop. More alarming to the doctor, however, is the presence of Danae’s elderly father (Kostas Laskos), a volatile drunkard who lurches through the cabin’s shadows like a growling beast. During a courtesy visit to her remote home, he notices odd patches of scaly, bark-like growth on Danae’s skin, which Panos takes to be a rare, untreated genetic disorder. Given the chilly reception he receives from the villagers – and their apparent lack of medical ailments – it’s unsurprising that the bored physician takes an interest in the lovely Danae, who dwells in a rustic cabin nestled deep in the nearby forest. The exception is Danae (Anastasia Rafaellla Konidi), a strange, dreamy young woman who Panos encounters on the road. It’s the sort of backwater settlement that has somehow resisted over a century’s worth of encroaching modernity – there are no landline phones, only one retail establishment, and virtually no residents under the age of 60. This, unfortunately, is Entwined’s fatal conceptual flaw: The feature’s limp drama is contingent on the hero never grasping that he has blundered into a dark fairy tale.įollowing the death of his father, British-educated physician Panos (Prometheus Aleifer) returns to his native Greece, accepting a position as the village doctor in a tiny, rural hamlet. Ultimately, what the filmmakers present is a diffident, low-budget modern reimagining of a mythological creature, the sort of film that refrains from ever saying the name of the beastie in question or even acknowledging that the characters might recognize it for what it is. The film is perhaps best described as a supernatural tragedy, with a liberal sprinkling of fantasy, horror, and romance elements – such that definitively assigning it to one genre or another is probably a dubious task. The feature was plainly conceived as a magical-realist folk-horror tale, although it never really presents its story in a way that elicits scares. It seems obvious what first-time screenwriter John De Holland and director Nikolakakis – who also has a story credit – intended with Entwined. Unfortunately, all this craft is in the service of a markedly uninvolving scenario, one in which nothing truly unexpected occurs and even an inattentive viewer will find themselves perpetually two steps ahead of the witless protagonist. Both Nikolakakis and cinematographer Thodros Mihopolous exhibit a knack for using mise-en-scène to evoke a distinct mood of sun-dappled mystery and menace. The performances are sturdy, the shots are pleasing to the eye, and the atmosphere is richly realized. It is not a bad film by any stretch, at least in terms of its raw craftsmanship. Unexpectedly, a prospect for a Kingdom Come film could intrigue some people who weren’t entirely pleased with Gunn’s plans. It’s an epic series and a great alternative perspective on DC’s iconic characters. The world is threatened by an incredibly powerful villain, Magog, and Superman must find a way to save the world and his fellow heroes. It's centered on a future in which heroes have largely lost a uniting sense of morality in the wake of the Justice League’s absence. He tweeted out a picture of Kingdom Come, a major and highly-respected miniseries from 1996 by Mark Waid and Alex Ross. Is The Easiest Movie For James Gunn's DCU To Keep The DCU is already going to feature special characters like Midnighter, Swamp Thing, and Booster Gold, so there’s certainly a place for the Main Man, Lobo. However, given the film's integration into the new DCU and Peter Safran’s comments on an Aquaman trilogy, those rumors are seemingly just that, rumors. There have been rumors recently that Jason Momoa would take up the role after Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Funnily enough, that just proves a point that if Lobo were to get his own movie or tv show, James Gunn might be the perfect fit for it as writer and director. In fact, if the old DCEU had ever really incorporated the cosmos, Lobo actually could’ve had a place in it given the tone and violence of such things as The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker.
